Multiple Homelab Dial-up Lines
Using a variety of old Cisco gear to expand my homelab dial-up setup from one line to multiple (available concurrently!) I'll figure out how to use Voice Interface Cards and set them up as an ATA, then we'll test the whole thing with a couple computers and a Dreamcast.

    I think I had that exact PCI card for my laptop back in the day. I think it was an Acer? Maybe and Asus? Anyway, it brings back memories. Bad ones. Stuff was so much harder to deal with then. It was the same nonsense as now where Microsoft would have to plug some security hole and push out an update, but then you'd boot your computer up and sometimes peripherals didn't work. Then you'd spend the next couple days waiting until the manufacturer pushed out an updated driver. I do miss Windows 7 though. If you got a machine like that thinkpad with some decent hardware it was just snappy as hell. Microsoft should have just done iterations of 7 to add functionality and left it alone. I think we'd all be better off right now.

    Even though I had internet from the early days (95ish), it still seems weird the modem was connected directly to the PC - I can't even remember what port it connected to?? I got 512kbps cable broadband in the UK around 1999 and that was a separate cable modem into a Netgear router which then fed into mine and my brothers PCs. Good times.

    I have seen Cisco's 16 port modem module and I have used the module in past years for about two years. Modem ports can be used also through TCP ports. Each modem has its own TCP port number. The modem connection can be established remotely using TCP ports and a computer. The connection is then between the computer and the Cisco modem port. 👍

    Man, I watch your videos religiously. You make me want to make impulsive and foolhardy eBay tech purchases that would make me very happy, and drive my partner mad. ❤️ I can’t speak for the exact firmware chip without a model, but from my experience of many, MANY other ICs, it will likely be that the pin needs to be set high to disable a certain feature. Given the nature of the chip, it’s probably something like a clear/reset function. [Meaning to say that it won’t be a matter of the IC requiring two different voltages.]

    I don't think you need to roll the pairs on a telephone line. They are bidirectional Tip/Ring not TX/RX. The analog signal from the line and the handset is mixed at each end by a transformer (the "hybrid"), so all you're doing is inverting the polarity of the signal. I believe that's technically wrong, although I would be surprised if most, if not all, telco equipment is made to tolerate reversed lines without degrading service, so it probably works "fine" anyway. Still, unless I'm mistaken, you don't need to do that, and shouldn't, just to ensure everything gets the signal polarity it expects. Oh, and if you install a new set of Keystone jacks, why not punch down the pairs on separate RJ11 jacks, rather than use a breakout cable? :-D

    • @clabretro
      @clabretro 2 дні тому

      Yeah I 100% did not need to roll the pairs, realized that later lol. I have some punch downs but figured I'll change my mind eventually and the breakout cable ends up being more flexible.

  • @nickwallette6201

    The FXS/FXO convention seems 100% backwards to me. FXO really should be a port that provides dialtone and battery -- because it's the "office" side of the wire, while FXS should be the station device -- the phone. But, IIRC, the nomenclature is backwards because it refers not to what the port _is,_ but what the port _connects to._

    People have no idea what they take for granted. I remember when dialup first came out and they would disconnect you, no matter what you were doing, after a couple of hours. Several ISPs would just cut you off for downloading too much in a 24hour period and you would have to wait until the next day. Now your internet is just on and people are so used to it just being there, they don’t know how to act when it doesn’t work, like their life is incomplete because they can’t get online…and I say all this while posting a comment on a UA-cam video online. 🙄 FWIW - I used to run the network for a metal fabrication shop, yes the shop was networked, and we had two shops, one in Nashville and one in Waco, connected with a T1 and terminal server. Those Cisco routers were my nemesis, we had a 99% guaranteed uptime T1 that went down weekly, until we switched providers and then it was rock solid…which was baffling because it was the exact same lines, nothing changed except who we paid. I hate technology.
